Примечание
К отходам производства относят образующиеся в процессе производства попутные вещества, не находящие применения в данном производстве: вскрышные породы, образующиеся при добыче полезных ископаемых, отходы сельского хозяйства, твердые вещества, улавливаемые при очистке отходящих технологических газов и сточных вод, и т.п.

Часть выпуска (продукции, понимаемой в широком смысле), в данный момент времени не находящая полезного применения. Время здесь упомянуто не случайно: то, что признается отходами сегодня, завтра путем применения эффективных технологий переработки, может превратиться в полезный продукт. Соотношение объемов производства полезных продуктов и «производства» отходов – ключевой показатель эффективности производства в целом и отдельных компаний, предприятий (см. Вэйст-индекс). Активное развитие отраслей переработки отходов – один из признаков преврашения индустриального общества в постиндустриальное, важное направление экологизации жизни общества постиндустриальных стран.
